Brown Sugar Vanilla Body Scrub

Here is a great handmade gift idea for Mother's Day - Brown Sugar Vanilla Body Scrub. This is so simple to put together, and looks beautiful once packaged in a glass jar with a ribbon, tag and an antique spoon. Remember at Christmas time we made Lemon Hand Scrub? That was a huge hit, and loved by all who received. This Brown Sugar Vanilla Scrub is another winner. Idea and recipe from Stephanie at Under The Table and Dreaming.

You will need:
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup granulated white sugar
1 cup sunflower oil
1 Tbsp pure vanilla extract
glass jar or container
ribbon and tag
spoon or scoop

Directions:
In a bowl mix together the brown sugar and white sugar.Mix well, until no lumps remain.
Measure one cup of sunflower oil. Since this isn't something I regularly purchase, I bought just the amount I needed in the bulk section of my grocery store. It is important to use subtle oil that doesn't have an overpowering smell, like olive oil does. Add the vanilla extract to the oil. Pour the oil and vanilla into the bowl with the sugars.
Mix well.
Does that look wonderful? It looks good enough to eat :)
Take a little scoop (about a tablespoon full) and try it out. Your hands will feel smooth and soft and smell great for hours. Package into glass jars and wrap a ribbon and tag around the jar.
I tied an antique spoon to the top, perfect for spooning out just what you need. You could also use a little scoop.
Wouldn't this be the perfect handmade gift to make for your Mother? Or Grandmother? Or Friend? It is so easy and simple to make, you might just want to go ahead and make one for yourself too.
All pictures in this post taken by Travis. And yes, he did eat the scrub. It looked that good.

  2. Oh, I love this! The pearl on the label is such a nice touch. My girlie has had keratosis since she was born, and sugar scrubs are one of the few things that help with the bumps. We'll definitely be making up a batch.

  5. This looks so wonderful! I was making a body scrub (I don't remember how) and found that using the sunflower oil worked the best. My store stopped carrying it and olive oil just wasn't the same, so I quit making it.

  7. Oh this is so pretty. I've been mixing up 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tbsp honey and a little lemon juice as a homemade facial exfoliator, but I love that this will last for a little while and can be used as a gift. Great idea!

    any other suggestions?

  9. The spoon I used in the post was from an antique store. Try thrift stores for unique silverware.
Also, I like to use porcelain jelly spoons (check out the lemon hand scrub to see them pictured). I found these jelly spoons on Amazon, and they pair nicely with little jars of scrubs:

    Hope that helps!

  10. I actually blended cherry flavored candy and made a powder and mixed that with the sugar scrub... makes a nice pink and smells delish!!

  11. Made this scrub for everyone for Christmas and it was great! I changed the composition to: 2/3 cup of white sugar, 1/3 of the course Sugar in the Raw, and 1 cup of light brown sugar so it would fit 75% of a 20 ounce jar. I also used Mineral Oil instead of Sunflower as it had even less of that oily scent. Then I added a bit less vanilla and 15-20 drops of peppermint to make Vanilla-Peppermint Brown Sugar Body Scrub! Everyone loved it! (And yes I had to taste it too) :)

  12. How much does this recipe make? Is it only enough for one pint sized jar?

  13. Joy - I used the small jelly jars (4 oz each) and if I'm remembering correctly it make enough for 4 of those, plus the one larger pint size jar shown.

  14. Just made this for my mum's birthday tomorrow, I've used all the right quantities but after putting it in the jar the oil and sugar keeps separating :(

    1. Same here!! Don't know what to do about it :(

  15. it does separate when it sits, so you have to stir it each time before you use it. Hope that helps.

  16. Love the idea, too! Could you also substitute the vanilla extract with real vanilla bean or is that not strong enough to scent the entire jar? Also, I was thinking - I would probably use canola oil instead of sunflower oil. since in my experience the sunflower oil becomes rancid an thus smelly rather soon. What are your experiences) How long can you store it?
