Dry Rubs Seasonings in Jars - Father's Day Idea

Looking for a homemade gift idea for Father's Day?  Here is what my Dad is getting:  Homemade Dry Rub Seasonings in jars.  Perfect for grilling all summer long.  My Dad and I had a discussion about dry rubs and grill seasonings a few weeks ago, and he mentioned how hard it is to find good dry rubs that do not contain large amounts of salt and sugar.  I remembered seeing a few recipes to make your own dry rub seasonings on Pinterest, and actually on Weight Watchers' website.  So I decided to make him a little set for Father's Day.  These seasonings are perfect for chicken, steak, fish, burgers, shrimp and even potatoes.  Add a new grilling utensil set to the dry rubs in jars for a complete grill themed Father's Day gift.
I found my little jars with clamps at T.J.Maxx, in case you were wondering.
There are several recipes out there but I choose to make the following rubs:

All-American Barbeque Rub
recipe from Weight Watchers
2 tablespoons mild paprika
2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon chile powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Southwestern Rub
recipe from Weight Watchers
2 tablespoons chile powder (I used Ancho Chili powder)
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons dry mustard
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon mild paprika
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon ground coriander
2 teaspoons salt

Jamaican Jerk Spice Rub
2 tablespoons coriander
2 tablespoons ground ginger
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoon ground thyme
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

I'll show you the method.
Gather the spice ingredients listed.  You will probably have most of the spices you need already.  I purchased a couple of the ones I was missing in the bulk bin section at our local store.  Spices are remarkably cheaper when you buy them in bulk bins, and you only need to purchase the amount you need.
Measure the spices into a small jar that has a screw top lid.
Cover and shake well, until combined.
To get rid of any lumps, use a little mini whisk or a small fork and stir vigorously until the lumps are gone.
Pour spice mixture into your gifting jar.
 Make little labels.
Tape the labels to the top of the jar (use double stick tape on the backs).
I think these dry rubs will be an awesome gift that my Dad will really love.  Happy Father's Day!

  1. Such a good idea. I did this a few years back at Christmas time for our neighbors and it was a hit. I'll have to try out some of your recipes!
